Man, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to solo some D&D-style adventure only to get bored because the AI just spits generic fantasy nonsense or forgets what happened two turns ago. Then I found Friends & Fables and… damn, this thing actually works.
You build (or grab) a world – cyber-noir streets, post-apoc wastelands, classic high fantasy, whatever floats your boat. Throw in custom NPCs, weird spells, locations that feel lived-in. Then Franz (the AI Game Master) takes the wheel. He handles full 5e rules: initiative, attacks of opportunity, advantage/disadvantage, the works. No hand-wavy “you win because plot armor” – he rolls virtual dice, tracks HP/inventory/spells, and remembers your backstory way better than most DMs I’ve played with.
The real hook? Long-term memory. Your shady deal with a demon three sessions back? It comes biting you in the ass later. Choices matter. Combat feels tactical (not just narrative slop), and you can crank the weirdness; eldritch romance, full-on conspiracy heists, whatever. No heavy filters killing the vibe (as long as it’s legal). Thousands of player-made worlds to jump into if you’re feeling lazy, or go nuts homebrewing your own.
It’s not flawless, Franz can get a little repetitive or obsessed with random details (looking at you, “intricately carved wooden box” memes in early reviews) – but it’s in active development, devs are super responsive on Discord, and updates keep making it sharper. In 2026, it’s legitimately one of the best ways to scratch that endless TTRPG itch without rounding up friends or paying for Roll20 sessions.
Feel free to dip your toes in, credits for longer/deeper runs. Head to fables.gg if you want something that feels like a living campaign instead of just a chat bot.
If you’re into AI Worlds on alt.games, this one’s a no-brainer. Devs reading this: your weird AI-driven thing belongs here too, hit us up!
