Okay, so I picked up Monster Hunter Now thinking it would be another Niantic cash-grab like Pokemon Go but with monsters instead of pocket pets. Turns out, it’s actually pretty damn solid and scratches a different itch.
You walk around your neighborhood or park or whatever and the app overlays these massive beasts from the Monster Hunter series right there on your screen. Rathalos chilling on top of your local coffee shop? Check. Zinogre prowling the sidewalk? Yup. You tap to start the hunt, swing your virtual weapon with swipes and dodges, and it feels way more like the real Monster Hunter games than I expected. No endless button mashing, just quick bursts of combat that last a minute or two so you can do it while waiting for the bus or during lunch.
The gear grind makes it return. Carve parts from the monsters you hunt, craft better weapons and armor, upgrade everything. It’s got that addictive loop but without needing hours in one sitting. Multiplayer hunts pop up if other players are nearby, or you can join randoms online for tougher stuff. Weather and time of day change what shows up, so you actually notice seasons and stuff in real life more.
Downsides? Battery killer if you’re not careful, and yeah it’s got the usual microtransactions for potions and extra tries, but you can play totally free and still progress fine. In early 2026 it’s still getting big updates with new monsters and events, and the community is pretty active on forums sharing hunt spots.
If you’re into games that drag you outside and make the world feel alive in a weird way, grab Monster Hunter Now. It’s free on mobile. Poke around the AR hunts section on alt.games if this vibe hits you. Devs with similar location stuff, drop your game here.
